Of the 12 that survive, five have been reconstructed at Zaanse Schans, together with other historical buildings reminiscent of the area's past.
Celebrating Carnival in Maastricht (Holland): The country never seems so divided by the great rivers as it does during Carnival season. Southerners declare that their celebrations are superior, and if you ever run into a southern Carnival parade, you'll have to admit they know how to party. In Maastricht, the festivities are especially boisterous -- people parade through the streets in an endless procession of outrageous outfits and boundless energy.
