Our suggestions for exploring Thessaloniki are really just that: suggestions. Unlike Athens, with its Acropolis, Thessaloniki has no one "must-see" monument. The main attraction here is the city itself: a city with squares built around churches and Roman palaces, whose markets pulse with life, and whose harborside cafes and promenade refresh the weary.
Some might argue that the splendid Archaeological Museum or the Museum of Byzantine Culture are the town's "must see" attractions, but others would plead the case for Ano Poli (Upper City), the old Turkish Quarter. Still others would simply recommend a leisurely stroll along Aristotelous Street, taking in the city's main markets, the ancient agora, several small churches and Turkish baths, the Alatza mosque, and the city's main church, St. Demetrius -- and as many sidewalk cafes as possible.
