Planning a Trip

Getting There

By Train -- Todi is on the private FCU train line (www.fcu.it), not the state-run FS rail routes. There are about a dozen trains daily from Perugia's FCU stations (45 min.). From Spoleto, take the train to Terni (22 daily) and transfer to the FCU line (14 per day; about 1 hr. total travel time). There are about eight runs daily from Rome to Terni that meet up with an FCU train (about 2 hr. total). At Todi, get off at Ponte Rio (not Ponte Naia) station (tel. 075-894-2092 or 075-882-092), where a bus will be waiting to take you the 5km (3 miles) up to town. If you're staying at Villa Luisa, tell the driver and he'll let you off at the first stop.

By Car -- Todi is off Umbria's central highway, the E45, which branches off the A1 Autostrada heading north from Rome at Orte and continues past Todi to Perugia. The SS79bis makes its winding way between Todi and Orvieto, but the less scenic SS448 is quicker. You can park free in lots just south of the Porta Romana and along the west side of town either below Porta Amerina or behind Santa Maria della Consolazione. Pay parking in the town's center is available in front of the Nicchioni.

By Bus -- There are two bus terminals in town. From Piazza della Consolazione, there are four to eight runs daily to and from Perugia (40-60 min.); and one early-morning run to and early-afternoon run from Orvieto (2 hr.). From Piazza Jacopone, a bus runs daily to and from Rome center and Fiumicino airport (2-2 1/2 hr.), and there's a Friday-only midday tourist run to and from Orvieto (2 hr.).

Visitor Information

The central tourist office is under the arches of the Palazzo del Popolo (tel. 075-894-2526). It's open Monday through Saturday 9:30am to 1pm and 3:30 to 7pm, Sunday 10am to 1pm and 3:30 to 7pm (in winter it closes at 6pm, and is not open Sun afternoons). The administrative APT branch has offices at Piazza Umberto I 6 (tel. 075-894-3395 or 075-894-2686; fax 075-894-2406) and Via Ciuffelli 8 (tel. 075-894-3867; fax 075-894-4311).

Festivals & Markets

For a decade, the town has put on the classy Todi Festival, 10 days at the end of August showcasing theater, music, and ballet, often surprisingly cutting edge. For information, contact Teatro Comunale, Via Mazzini (tel. 075-894-3430 or 075-894-3933). An antiques fair is held around Easter. The weekly market is Saturdays at the sports fields south of the center, while an annual antiques fair is held in the Palazzo del Vignola the second week of April.
