Frommer's Review
This Tokyo old-timer is a popular choice for knowledgeable travelers seeking up-to-date accommodations with traditional touches. Built just before the 1964 Olympics, it's nestled against the wooded hillside leading to Hie Shrine, one of the city's most important Edo-era shrines, yet is centrally located in Akasaka convenient to the city's many sights. A member of the Tokyu chain, it has the unique ability to make foreign guests feel as if they're in Asia and at home at the same time, making it a longtime local favorite. Fantastically large floral bouquets are the trademark of the dark, subdued lobby, which overlooks a small Japanese garden with a carp pond. The level of service is extraordinary. While double and twin rooms are comfortably large, the 50 single rooms are fairly small. All come with traditional shoji screens, as well as light-blocking sliding panels; the best ones overlook the greenery of Hie Shrine, while some pricier rooms have high-speed Internet connections.
Facilities: 5 restaurants; cafe; bar; lounge; outdoor pool; small fitness room; concierge; travel agency; business center; shopping arcade; salon; barbershop; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; same-day laundry/dry-cleaning service; nonsmoking rooms; executive-level rooms; in-house dentist.
