Frommer's Review

This 40-story white skyscraper -- an Akasaka landmark with a facade that reminds me of an unfolding fan -- caused quite a stir when it opened in 1983, with some Tokyoites complaining that it was too cold and sterile. I think that the Prince, designed by Kenzo Tange, was simply ahead of its time, with a blindingly white marble lobby intentionally spacious and empty, so as not to compete with brilliant Japanese kimono (weddings are big business in Japanese hotels). It set the pace for a flurry of hotels that followed, though nowadays marble is out while wood, stone, and hues of brown are the current hotel-fashion statement. Never out of fashion is the hotel's signature restaurant, Le Trianon, housed in a stately 80-year-old mansion that once belonged to the Imperial family. Each average-size guest room is set at a 45-degree angle from the center axis of the building's core, for a corner view with expansive windows overlooking the city and lots of sunshine; request one overlooking the Akasaka side, and you'll have a view of neon lights down below and Tokyo Tower in the distance. The single rooms are among the nicest in Tokyo, with three windows forming a pleasant alcove around a sofa.

Facilities: 8 restaurants; 2 bars; 2 lounges; outdoor heated pool May-Sept (fee: ¥1,000/$9.50); small exercise room; concierge; tour desk; business center w/spectacular 20th-floor view; convenience store; salon; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; same-day laundry/dry-cleaning service; nonsmoking rooms.
