Frommer's Review
Across from bustling Shibuya Station and connected by a footbridge and underground passage, this busy, modern hotel opened in 2000, the first new hotel to debut in Shibuya in many years. It's been so successful (I don't know why no one thought of locating hotels in Shibuya before), Tokyu promptly built another one farther from the station. With an excellent location above Mark City shopping mall (reception is on the fifth floor), the Excel tries hard to appeal to everyone: For business travelers, "Excel" twin rooms feature high-speed dataports. For women, two floors are reserved only for females and accessed by a special key, with in-room amenities -- such as face cream, jewelry boxes, and plants -- also geared toward women. Rooms are available for visitors with disabilities. Almost half of all rooms are for nonsmokers. Rooms, on the 7th to 24th floors, are comfortable. Ask for an upper-floor room facing Shinjuku; the night view is great. In-room refrigerators are empty so that you can stock them yourself from hotel vending machines which, by the way, management claims are the largest in Japan.
