Review of Yokji-doThe largest island in the Yeonhwa archipelago, it is located about 32km (20 miles) from Tongyeong. It used to be called "Nok-do" (Deer Island) because of the large number of deer that roamed the island, but the population was greatly reduced during the 16th century. That's when Japanese sailors began hunting the deer for their antlers, which they then sent to the Japanese royal palace. Fish farming is the principal source of income here, and regular farming (especially of sweet potatoes) is also practiced. All the island's beaches are pebbled, the largest being Deokdong Beach, which is full of black stones called bamjagal (night pebbles). Outshone by its more famous neighbors, Yokji-do sees few tourists and doesn't even have any taxis. However, you can bring your own rental car over a ferry. There is very limited bus service, so check with the tourist office for schedules before venturing out to the island. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
