Begin your exploration at the central Plaza de los Fueros, from where you can wander through a maze of narrow alleys laid out during the Moorish occupation.
At the square called Plaza Vieja, Tudela's most important monument, Catedral de Santa María, is open Monday to Friday 10am to 1:30pm and 4 to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 1:30pm. Admission is 3€. Constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, its facade has an outstanding work of art, the Doorway of the Last Judgment, with about 120 groups of figures. Creation is depicted, but the artisans were truly inspired in showing the horrors of hell. The church contains many Gothic works of art, such as choir stalls from the 1500s. Several chapels are richly decorated, including one dedicated to Our Lady of Hope, with masterpieces from the 15th century. The main altar contains an exceptional retablo painted by Pedro Díaz de Oviedo. The small but choice cloisters are the highlight of the tour, however, and cost 1€ to enter. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, they contain many Romanesque arches. Capitals on the columns include scenes from the New Testament.
