Getting There

By Train -- The Ulm Hauptbahnhof is on several major and regional rail lines, with frequent connections in all directions. More than 40 trains per day arrive from Munich (trip time: 1 hr., 15 min.) and some 50 or more from Stuttgart (1 hr., 10 min.). Daily trains also arrive from Cologne (3 hr., 12 min.). From Frankfurt (2 hr., 20 min.), you can take an ICE (InterCity-Express), the fastest and most comfortable way to travel by rail. For rail information and schedules, call tel. 01805/996633.

By Bus -- There are no buses from major cities; local buses service only satellite towns -- mostly bedroom communities of Ulm.

By Car -- Access by car is via the A8 Autobahn east and west or the A7 north and south. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to drive to Ulm from Munich and about 3 hours to drive from Frankfurt.

Visitor Information

Tourist-Information, Münsterplatz (tel. 0731/1612830; www.tourismus.ulm.de), is open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm. From May to October, it's also open Sunday 10:30am to 2:30pm.

Getting Around

Ulm's only tram line runs east-west, connecting the suburban Messe (convention center) with the main Hauptbahnhof (railway station) and Söflingen. Ulm's historic core, Altstadt, lies within an easy walk from the Hauptbahnhof. Bus nos. 3, 7, and 8 radiate from the station to the suburbs. Buses and trams run at intervals of between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the time of day and day of the week, and cost from 1.50€ to 2.10€ ($2.40-$3.40) depending on the distance you travel.
