Zur Forelle Review

So authentically historic and so renowned as a bastion of Germanic Gemütlichkeit (coziness) is Zur Forelle that whenever a celebrity arrives in town, their hosts entertain them here. (Noteworthy visitors have included Albert Einstein and Herbert von Karajan.) Named after the trout that appear in succulent versions on the menu, it contains three antique, half-paneled dining rooms, an outdoor terrace with a view of the river and Ulm's historic core, masses of geraniums in its exterior window boxes, and a history of feeding hungry diners that goes back at least 375 years. Food items arrive in generous portions and reflect the best old-fashioned German cooking of the region, with special emphasis on fish. Your meal might begin with Ulm-style herb-and-salmon soup, spicy fish soup with garlic, or a platter of pickled seasonal vegetables. Main courses include beef and liver stew with roasted potatoes and green salad; filet of beef with fresh mushrooms and an herb-flavored cream sauce, served with house-made noodles and green salad; a mixed grill that offers roasted sausage, sliced pork, and hash-brown potatoes on one platter; roasted Barbary duckling in a reduction of port wine; and a wide choice of fish based on whatever is available that day from the local fish market.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
