The three stars are for the newly refurbished and utterly gorgeous South Wing suites featuring stylish, contemporary furnishings, Asian artwork, balconies overlooking a Japanese garden, shoji-style sliding doors, and luxurious marble bathrooms with deep soaker tubs and glassed-in showers (you may want to move into one of the bathrooms). This art-filled, resort-style hotel occupies a prettily landscaped promontory jutting out into the Inner Harbour, and consists of the original north wing and the newer south wing designed by noted Vancouver architect Arthur Erickson in 1989. The overall design reflects the elegant simplicity of Japanese artistic principals and is a refreshing change from the chintz and florals found in so many Victoria hotels. Rooms in the older north wing are fine -- with good beds, pocket balconies (every room in the hotel has a water view), and nice bathrooms -- but the south wing is where you want to be. A complete menu of in-room spa services is available. The hotel is in the process of a total remodel to be completed in 2008.
