To reach Pender Island, one of the Gulf Islands between the mainland and Vancouver Island, you have to take a ferry or water taxi from Sidney, north of Victoria. It's worth the trip, because staying at Poets Cove, the most luxurious resort and spa in the Gulf Islands, makes for a great romantic getaway. Overlooking Bedwell Harbour and its own marina (many guests arrive on their own boats), it opened in 2004 as a 22-room lodge with a cluster of seaside cottages, all built with a contemporary Craftsman-style Pacific Northwest look and ambience. All the accommodations feature ocean or forest-and-water views, fireplaces, big bathtubs for soaking, and all the amenities of an upscale resort. The lodge rooms are snug and charming, with great bathrooms, private balconies, and harbor views. Cottages and villas have two or three bedrooms, gourmet kitchens, and usually come with a patio or outdoor hot tub. You can dine on fresh Pacific Northwest cuisine at the Aurora Restaurant in the lodge, or enjoy snacks and comfort food in the lounge. Sussurus Spa offers a full complement of relaxation and aesthetic treatments, including spa treatments for couples.
