Planning a Trip

Getting There -- Trains connect Vienne with the rest of France. Some trips require a transfer in Lyon, 20 minutes away. For information, call tel. 08-92-35-35-35, or visit www.voyages-sncf.com. Buses from Lyon arrive about eight times a day, making many stops and taking about an hour; for information, contact Vienne's Gare Routière (tel. 04-76-00-38-38), adjacent to the railway station. The one-way bus or train fare from Lyon is 6€ ($8.70). If you're driving from Lyon, take N7 (which is more direct) or A7, an expressway that meanders along the banks of the Rhône.

Visitor Information -- The Office de Tourisme is at cours Brillier (tel. 04-74-53-80-30; fax 04-74-53-80-31; www.vienne-tourisme.com).

Special Events -- In the first 2 weeks of July, Vienne attracts some of the biggest names in jazz for the annual Festival du Jazz à Vienne. Tickets range from 27€ to 30€ ($39-$44). You can get tickets and information from the Théâtre Antique de Vienne, 4 rue Chantelouve (tel. 04-74-85-00-05; www.jazzavienne.com).
