The former city jail, 2 blocks from the bus station, is now a pub with an open courtyard furnished with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. In summer it's a mass of flowers. Full meals may include homemade soup of the day followed by fresh salmon, lamb in burgundy sauce, or stuffed quail in Cointreau sauce. From the charcoal grill, you can order rump steak or chicken with Stilton cheese, and longtime favorites include beef Wellington or steak-kidney-and-ale pie. Vegetarian dishes are also offered. Upstairs is an Elizabethan timbered restaurant. The food is a notch above the typical pub grub.
