Evergreen Lodge

A rough-and-tumble Prohibition-era destination for the workers who built the dam that flooded nearby Hetch Hetchy Valley, Evergreen Lodge has been reborn as one of the best cabin resorts in the Sierra Nevada. Located 7 miles from the roar of the highway, the lodge underwent a major renovation beginning in 2004, when new ownership took over and built new cabins and renovated others. The end results are tremendous: rustic art made from peach boxes, rockers on the decks and porches, a fresh and comfortable feel, and space for two to six guests per cabin. (Also available: "Custom Camping" sites, with tents furnished with cushy foam mattresses and all the necessary gear.) The lodge's excellent recreation program includes guided bike rides and hikes, live music, basket-weaving and dancing classes, and s'mores on the campfire. The restaurant is also top-notch, and the original woodsy bar a classic.
