Restaurant Spice/Brasserie Quadrino

This pair of likable restaurants lies about 4km (2 1/2 miles) north of Zurich's main railway station, within an apartment complex whose units are often rented out to European families with children or to business travelers for short-term stays. The gastronomic centerpiece is the Restaurant Spice, whose minimalist decor focuses on a large boulder artfully positioned in an otherwise simple setting with a maximum emphasis on the feng shui aspects of its position. Expect a cultivated, fussed-over menu that includes duck liver with honey sauce; fried halibut with salad and passion-fruit vinaigrette; and platters piled high with a combination of filet steak and ragout of beef in a spice marinade. The chef is especially proud of his rack of venison stuffed with apricots that is served with Brazilian tonga beans, onions, and a sauce concocted from port wine with hints of coffee and chocolate.

Prices are less expensive and service rituals a lot less elaborate in the Brasserie, where pastas, salads, grilled meats, and seafood platters are the norm. Seating in the Brasserie includes small, slightly claustrophobic tables for two, as well as sprawling communal tables where strangers sometimes get acquainted with strangers.
