Frommer's Review
Long gone are the raucous and raunchy old days when a sprinkling of sawdust soaked up any beer that was spilled onto the floor of this place, and when most of the mostly male and mostly gay clientele looked like aimiably scruffy refugees from a logging camp. A few years ago, in the rush to "gentrify" the place, this Zurich institution was scrubbed squeaky-clean, a sushi bar was installed, a yuppy-style cocktail menu was made available, and everyone began looking like metrosexual wannabes. Despite the controversial cleanup, which hasn't been universally well-received, Barfüsser proudly lays claim to being the oldest continuously operated gay bar in Europe, with occasional (but increasingly rare) sightings of a clientele which has patronized the place since its establishment in 1956. Most show up after 8pm, and it's especially popular on weekends. The sushi bar serves continuously throughout the day until 11pm. It's open Monday to Wednesday from 11am to 1am, Thursday 11am to 2am, Friday and Saturday 11am to 3am, and Sunday 3pm to 1am.
