When talking Buffalo and food, it's easy to fixate on the well-known culinary oddities that originated here. (Full disclosure: We are huge fans of that local masterstroke, Beef on Weck.) And sure, it's kinda cool that you can still get Buffalo wings at the (overrated) Anchor Bar, 1047 Main St. (tel. 716/886-8920), where they were invented. But because of its ethnically diverse population, Buffalo is in fact a foodie magnet, with an almost astonishingly wide range of cuisine types to choose from.
Intimate and romantic (and pricey) Rue Franklin, 341 Franklin St. (tel. 716/852-4416), is widely considered the best French restaurant in the city, while Hutch's, 1375 Delaware Ave. (tel. 716/855-8409), is another favorite for fine dining. Kuni's, 226 Lexington Ave. (tel. 716/881-3800), is where the locals go for sushi, and Chef's, 291 Seneca St. (tel. 716/859-9187), is an old-school Southern Italian institution.
Speaking of old-school, Ulrich's, 674 Ellicott St., (tel. 716/855-8409), purports to be Buffalo's oldest tavern, and it has been dishing up schnitzel, sausages, and other German fare for almost 150 years. It oozes with history and atmosphere, and has a constantly changing, great selection of beer. Also bursting with character, Gabriel's Gate, 145 Allen St. (tel. 716/886-0602), churns out some of the best wings in town, as does Duff's, 3651 Sheridan Dr. (tel. 716/834-6234) -- we recommend either of these instead of Anchor Bar.
