The northeastern section of the Catskill Mountains is home to a number of the classic old resorts and attractions that have been here for years. The area around Cairo and Round Top, tucked in the fold of the Catskill Forest Preserve, has a number of small, family-run resorts. Outdoors enthusiasts, especially skiers, might also consider the new Kaatskill Mountain Club (tel. 800/486-8376; www.kaatskillmtnclub.com) on Hunter Mountain, with mountain, liftside, and trailside condos. There's a full spa, fitness center and large outdoor pool, though some of the rooms are unexpectedly dowdy.
