25 miles W of Frederick; 20 miles N of Antietam

Once a frontier town where Jonathan Hager built a fort to protect against Indian attack, Hagerstown is now best known for its charming city park, home to graceful swans and the remarkable Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and perhaps for the factory outlet stores near I-70.

Hagerstown's location also makes it a convenient place to stop while visiting Civil War sites -- have a picnic in City Park, visit the museum or Hager's house, or have a bite to eat in the town's arts-and-entertainment district.
