There are good restaurants at each of the lodgings we list. One other place stands out, Café Michele, in a quaint little house at the corner of Talkeetna Spur Road and 2nd Street (tel. 907/733-5300). It's a classy little bistro, serving sandwiches on homemade focaccia bread from a lunch menu ranging from $12 to $16, and dinner entrees such as ginger-soy salmon or pesto cream seafood pasta in the range of $23 to $39, including vegetarian dishes. Save room for dessert, as the baking is exceptional -- Michele even bakes the area's wedding cakes. The cafe is open summer only, daily 11am to 3pm and 5:30 to 10pm.

At mile 11 of the spur road, Flying Squirrel Bakery Cafe (www.flyingsquirrelcafe.com; tel. 907/733-NUTS) serves wholesome and tasty baked goods, sells soup for lunch, and has pizza nights. It's easy to find a burger, pizza, or sandwich on Main Street.
