This national park is a wilderness wonderland. Miles of trails not only lace the lava, but also cross deserts, rain forests, beaches, and in the winter, snow at 13,650 feet. Trail maps are sold at park headquarters and are highly recommended. Check conditions before you head out on a trail. It can be cool and rainy any time of the year; come prepared for hot sun, cold rain, and hard wind. Always wear sunscreen and bring plenty of drinking water.

Warning: If you have heart or respiratory problems, or if you're pregnant, don't attempt any hike in the park; the fumes will get to you.
