Mountain Biking -- Mount Snow was among the first resorts to foresee the widespread appeal of mountain biking, and the region remains one of the leading destinations for those whose vehicle of choice has knobby tires. The first mountain-bike school in the country was established here in 1988 and still offers a roster of classes that are especially helpful to novices. Clinics and guided tours are also available.

Mount Snow Sports (tel. 802/464-4040), at the Grand Summit Hotel, offers bike rentals, maps, and advice from late May to mid-October. The resort has some 45 miles of trails; bikers can explore an additional 140 miles of trails and abandoned roads that lace the region. For a fee, take your bike to the mountaintop by gondola and coast your way down along marked trails, or earn the ride by pumping out the vertical rise to the top. Fanning out from the mountain are numerous abandoned town roads that make for less challenging, but no less pleasant excursions.

Cross-Country Skiing -- The Mount Snow area offers excellent cross-country ski centers. The 9 miles of groomed trails at Timber Creek Cross-Country Touring Center (tel. 802/464-0999), in West Dover near the Mount Snow access road, are popular with beginners, and they hold snow nicely, thanks to the high elevation. Day passes are $18 for adults, $12 for kids 7 and under. The White House Ski Touring Center (tel. 800/541-2135 or 802/464-2135), at the inn of the same name on Route 100, has easy access to the Vermont woods, a good range of terrain, and 25 miles of trails. A pass costs $15 for adults, $10 for those 11 and under; equipment can be rented. The center also maintains snowshoe trails (same trail fee) and rentals.
