Craig Stoltz is a former editor of the award-winning Washington Post travel section, and currently a widely published freelance writer on travel, food, and drink.
In addition to his work for Frommer’s, Stoltz has published stories with Garden & Gun, Afar, Virginia Living, edibleDC, GoWorld Travel, Fodor's and others. Over the years his work has appeared in Esquire, GQ, Life, and other national publications.
He’s the Senior Editor of Food, Wine & Travel magazine, the digital publication of the International Food, Wine and Travel Writers Association. There he assigns stories and collaborates with writers to craft narratives that take the magazine’s readers all around the world. He also regularly writes for FWT, contributing pieces on travel, food, and wine.
Stoltz focuses on historical and cultural travel. Recent stories have explored the little-known connection between the island of Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina, and the rarely visited cottage in Washington, D.C. where Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. He explored the vast collection of artifacts from the Alamo collected by musician Phil Collins, and the practice of urban swimming in the Rhine in Basel, Switzerland.
Stoltz also writes regularly on food and drink. Recent stories have sent him along the path followed by the lead characters in the classic wine buddy movie Sideways, and into kitchens serving the cuisines of Iran, the Balkan nations, and the Chesapeake Bay.
While at the Washington Post, Stoltz was also editor of consumer technology and health and medicine. After he left the Post he had a second career, working on the Obamacare program for the federal government. His last assignment with the government was working with the AI program at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. An expert in generative AI, he now writes and speaks on the intersection of AI and the travel industry.
Stoltz has bachelor’s degree in English from Kent State University and a Master’s in English from the University of Maryland at College Park, where he specialized in non-fiction narrative writing.
