Stephen Brewer

Stephen Brewer got his first taste of Europe and foreign travel when he was a student at the American College in Paris in the 1970s, and he has been a travel editor and writer since completing his master’s degree in journalism at the University of Minnesota. He now has the good fortune to spend part of each year in Italy and Greece, and he is currently the author of Frommer’s Athens and the Greek Islands and a contributor to annual editions of Frommer’s Italy 2026.

For Frommer’s, he has also written Italy Day by Day, Greece Day by Day, Venice Day by Day and Athens Day by Day, as well as guides to Scotland, England, and Germany. He is also pleased to be a contributor to the bestselling 1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz. On the homefront, he is the author of a lavish coffee table book, One Hundred and One Beautiful Small Coastal Towns of America, published by Rizzoli, and DK Eyewitness Travel Guide to the Pacific Northwest, Insight’s Eating in New York and Insight’s New York Select.

He has written for Esquire, Connoisseur, and many other national magazines, and has also been a longtime editor of books on photography and illustration for such publishers as Crown and Phaidon. With photographer Nick Onken, he wrote Photo Trekking, a guide to travel photography, for Watson-Guptill.

Some of his happiest times have been wandering around the Umbrian countryside and following back roads through the Val d’Orcia, so he was especially honored to be awarded a 2026 Premio Giornalistico Raccontami l’Umbria (Journalist Prize for Stories on Umbria) from the Camera di Commercio dell’Umbria and to have been nominated for a Lowell Thomas Award for his Berlitz Pocket Guide to Tuscany and Umbria.
