Advice from Pauline Frommer: Don't Get Taken for a Ride in Las Vegas (Let That Cabbie Know That You Know the Score)

15 to 20 minutes.

That's about how long it should take a passenger to get from the Las Vegas Airport to their Strip hotel in Las Vegas, most times of the day. Heck, you can see the Strip right under you as you land in the plane (it's one of the great sights in aviation). The two are not far apart.

And yet, according to industry news publication Travel Weekly, some 22.5% of passengers are being taken on much longer rides than necessary when they use a cab to get in from the airport. They've gotten those statistics from a Nevada Leglistlative Counsel Bureau report.

Are cabbies pulling a quick one on passengers? Most probably. The article noted that during rush hour, taking a longer drive may result in shorter travel time. But those routes can sometimes double the fare. The average fare between the Airport and such center Strip properties as Bally's or the City Center hotels should be between $14 and $19.

The advice: let your driver know the score, er, fare, when you get into the cab.If you feel you have been ripped off, you can file a complaint by calling (702) 668-4005 or emailing taxiauth@taxi.state.nv.us

You want to save those extra dollars for the craps table, right?
