Watchmaker Shinola Is Opening a Hotel in Downtown Detroit

Detroit-based Shinola, maker of watches, fancy bicycles, and other luxury goods, is expanding into the hotel business.

The 129-room Shinola Hotel is set to open in the company's hometown on January 2.

Developed in collaboration with local real estate firm Bedrock, the property encompasses three new buildings as well as two historic ones—the former homes of the T.B. Rayl Co. department store and another retailer that sold Singer sewing machines.

The hotel is located amid Detroit's revitalizing Woodward Avenue shopping district, just south of the city's major sports venues, including Ford Field and Comerica Park, home of the NFL's Lions and MLB's Tigers, respectively.

Each guest room will be stocked with Shinola products such as desk clocks and alpaca throw blankets. Take your pick of 50 different room configurations.

The hotel's abundant food and drink offerings were put together by chef Andrew Carmellini of New York's NoHo Hospitality Group. Among other eateries, the Shinola will feature an upscale Italian restaurant, a beer hall, and a fried chicken joint.
