It's easy to recommend the Wholemeal Café, 60 Commercial St., Takaka (tel. 03/525-9426). It has the best food in the area, and you can't help feeling it's horrendously healthy as well as delicious. It's also a great place to pick up picnic fare. The cafe is open in summer daily from 7:30am to 9:30pm; after Easter, it's open Sunday through Tuesday 8:30am to 5pm, and Thursday through Saturday from 8:30am until late.

Near Collingwood, the Old School Café & Bar, 1115 Collingwood Puponga Main Rd., Pakawau (tel. 03/524-8457), is an excellent pit stop (summer daily 10am-late; winter Wed-Sun 11am-late); and at Pohara, enjoy a wide choice of seafood and gourmet pizzas at Penguin Café & Bar, 818 Abel Tasman Dr. (tel. 03/525-6126). It's open daily in summer from 9am.
