Abingdon has six chain motels adjacent to I-81. Hampton Inn (tel. 800/426-7866 or 276/619-4600) and Super 8 (tel. 800/800-8000 or 276/676-3310) are most convenient to downtown at Exit 17. Quality Inn & Suites (tel. 877/676-9090 or 276/676-9090) and Holiday Inn Express (tel. 800/465-4329 or 276/676-2929) are at Exit 19, at the north end of town. Best Western Abingdon Inn & Suites (tel. 800/800-8000 or 276/676-3310) and Comfort Inn (tel. 800/221-2222 or 276/676-2222) are at Exit 14, between downtown and Dixie Pottery.

Bed & Breakfasts -- In addition to the Summerfield Inn, Abingdon has more than 15 B&B accommodations. Among them, The Shepherd's Joy (tel. 276/628-3273; www.shepherdsjoy.com) is a working sheep farm.

You can also rent Summers Cottage, 309 W. Main St. (tel. 2767/628-5556; www.summerscottageabingdon.com), a small Victorian house built in 1909 and meticulously restored in 2009 by Ramsey and Betsy White, who also own Zazzy'z Coffee House, about 100 yards away. The cottage has two bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen, and a screened back porch. Betsy is the former curator of the William King Museum and has decorated the walls with works by local artists and artisans. Rates range from $125 to $250 depending on the day of the week and the season.
