As you might have guessed from the name, this atmospheric museum is located right in the city walls, in an ancient tunnel. This placement gives the exhibits—all of which explore daily life from the Ottoman period through the founding of Israel—added weight, though even if they were to be housed in a warehouse, the reproduction of a 19th-century market (the museum’s showpiece) would be fascinating. A second section of the museum displays exquisite antique furniture (including pieces inlaid with mother of pearl in the old Damascus tradition) and decorative items.
