Italian Memorial
Though just 3km (1 3/4 miles) west of the German Memorial, the Italian Memorial is quite different: Its soaring 46m (150-ft.) white column with sharp, modernist lines stands against the bright blue sky. Inside the echoing interior, casualties from the Italian forces lie in walls of white-faced vaults. There's an altar inside the memorial backed by a large window that faces the sea. It's worth visiting this place when it's empty, simply because voices and footsteps echo loudly through the space.
