Fairbanks House

Boasting all the amenities, and almost as much privacy as a first-class hotel, this superbly refurbished, romantic 1885 Italianate home is the top B&B choice in the historic district. As gorgeous as it is, it used to be known as “Fairbanks’s Folly,” because of its ostentatious original décor, and because Mrs. Fairbanks, wife of a Confederate major turned Florida Senator who built the place for her, hated it. Rooms here are each decorated differently, but they have one thing in common: they’re very Victorian. Many rooms, and all of the cottages, offer private entrances for guests. The Captain’s Room, originally Mrs. Fairbanks’ bedroom, has a cedar closet, four poster bed, fireplace, and Victorian clawfoot soaking tub. The Kitchen Suite, named for its original function in the home, is one of the finest units, with a private porch, and two-person jacuzzi bathtub. The two-bedroom Grand Tower Suite, occupying the entire top floor, has plenty of room to spread out, plus 360-degree views and its own whirlpool tubThe manse rests on a lush acre of soaring oaks, swimming pool, Adirondack chairs, magnolias, fragrant jasmine arbors, and a butterfly garden (all landscaping meets eco-friendly standards). A gourmet, two-course breakfast is served in the formal dining room and on the breezy piazzas by the pool garden, there’s also a daily social hour, and fresh baked cookies. Children 16 and over are welcome, but must be in the same room as their parents as long as the room can accommodate everyone.
