After the crush of the Rijksmuseum, take a breather in the spacious Museumplein, home to all three of Amsterdam’s great art museums. At press time, the Van Gogh was being extended but work on the Stedelijk, including its incongruous “bathtub” extension, is complete. The elaborate facade of Het Concertgebouw faces the Rijksmuseum across the piazza, which has become a buzzing public space with lawns, buskers playing South American pan pipes, the brilliant open-air terrace of Café Cobra , museum stores, and a kids’ playground. In winter the area in front of the Rijksmuseum is transformed into a fairytale ice rink, backed by one of Amsterdam’s iconic Iamsterdam signs, which normally has scores of kids clambering all over it.
