Long considered the boutique hotel of choice in Amsterdam, the Pulitzer underwent a thorough renovation and refurbishment in 2017; the result is a more cohesive and contemporary design sensibility that still retains its charming historic character. Rooms (a jumble of shapes and sizes) are dressed in sophisticated muted colors with bright, jewel-toned accents; of particular note are the four themed Collector’s Suites that are larger than some New York City apartments. As the hotel is a combination of 25 interlinked canal houses, negotiating your way around the maze-like property can be frustrating at times. But once you’ve found the path to the famous Pulitzer’s Bar, where you can sip classic cocktails in a plush, clubby setting, all will be well. What hasn’t changed is the hotel’s prime location, on the Prinsengracht canal between the quaint Jordaan and the tourist hotspots of the Old Center, and among the retail delights of the buzzy Nine Streets.
