Musée Jean Lurçat
There are actually four museums in town, but the most interesting is in the Ancien Hôpital St-Jean. A hospital established in 1174, visitors now come for its famous tapestry, Le Chant du Monde (The Song of the World), created by Jean Lurçat between 1957 and 1966. This monumental work of 10 panels is a symphony of the artist’s interpretation of the destiny of the world, from awe-inspiring space travel to the horrible apocalypses of war. Be sure to view the more than 60 tapestries the museum has on view and its 17th-century dispensary, equipped with shelves of earthenware jars and trivets. Don’t miss the Romanesque cloister with its secret garden on your way out.
