Gwen Webster's barbecue shack hugs the beach at Shoal Bay. It's a family-friendly spot: The palm grove here is one of the few naturally shady seaside spots on the island, and it comes with hammocks and picnic tables. Alas, Gwen's has faced trials and tribulations of late—the place burned down in a fire in 2010 and had to be rebuilt from the ground up, and the beach has eroded so much along this stretch that some of the palms have been lost. But Gwen cooks on, preparing delicious barbecued ribs and chicken from lunch on up until sunset. We think Gwen's special slaw is worth the trip alone. On Thursday and Sunday Gwen's showcases live scratch bands or reggae (1 to 6:30pm).
