Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
New Zealand’s most important art space, this is the best place to see people stroking their little beards and opining intelligently about what they see in front of them. And what they see is a really pretty impressive collection of more than 15,000 artworks set on four floors: historic, modern, and contemporary New Zealand art, international paintings, sculpture, and prints from the 11th century to today, all enclosed in a complex that melds an early French Renaissance–style building from 1887 with a rather expensive extension completed in 2011. It won the World Architecture Festival’s World Building of the Year award in 2013, so enjoy the extraordinary space as well as the artwork. As for the art, it runs the gamut from works by Old Masters to groundbreaking Māori and Pacific pieces you simply won’t see anywhere else. Exhibitions change regularly. We highly recommend the gallery tours, but they must be booked in advance. Budget an hour for your visit.
