Perched at the top of a hill on the banks of the River Rhône, the Jardin des Doms is a petite park, created during the 19th century. These manicured gardens include shady walking trails, a pond populated by koi carp, and Buvette Café, which serves cool drinks, wine by the glass, crepes, and other snacks. There’s also a small Côtes du Rhône vineyard (entirely appropriate as Avignon is the capital of the Côtes du Rhône appellation), which was entirely replanted in 2014. It’s the only vineyard in France located entirely within a city center’s limits. The park’s location affords superb views over Pont St-Bénézet, Île de la Barthelasse, Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, and Mont Ventoux. From the vineyard, you can descend onto a portion of the old city ramparts, which connect to the eastern side of Pont St-Bénézet.
