Bad Ischl Attractions
Bad Ischl has chic shopping, as you'll note if you go along Pfarrgasse. This street comes to an end at the Esplanade, a shaded promenade where the most famous figures in Europe once strolled. Wealthy salt merchants lived along this promenade, and Maximilian, ill-fated emperor of Mexico, was born in a royal dwelling here in 1832.
The former pump room, Trinkhalle, where the fashionable have eaten and drunk since 1831, is in the middle of town on Ferdinand-Auböck-Platz. Many of the buildings on the square are in Biedermeier style. The 1753 Pfarrkirche (Parish Church) was rebuilt when Maria Theresia was empress.

Kaiservilla
The most important attraction in town is this imperial villa close to the center. Emperor Franz Josef used this Biedermeier palace for 60 summers as a residence and recreation center. Marmorschlössl
Surrounded by the Kaiserpark, this structure, dating from the mid-1800s, houses a photo-historic collection (Sammlung Frank) documenting the history of the spa. The tiny place was once used by Empress Elisabeth as a tea pavilion.
Bad Ischl Nightlife
Most of the year, Bad Ischl seems trapped in its imperial past, a nostalgia that can be relaxing at best and soporific at worst. During July and August, however, the spa livens up a bit and presents a well-rehearsed operetta in whichever public building can accommodate it. In the past, The Merry Widow or Johann Strauss's Der Tzigeunerbaron have been presented 3 nights a week, usually at 8pm. Tickets cost 28€ to 68€ ($45-$109).
