Duquesa de Cardona Hotel

The grand old Duchess has the best of both worlds. Set in a stately 19th century palace, this slightly staid boutique hotel has fabulous views of Port Vell and its marina, yet it’s an easy stroll to La Rambla and the old city. Standard rooms are large at 237 square feet, beds are firm, and everything is ship shape. Rooms on the front (an extra charge for waterfront views) are larger and more romantic than some of the tighter quarters on the back that face into El Born.Guests praise the friendly, attentive service. The sixth-floor terrace restaurant does classic Spanish and Catalan tapas well, but there are more adventurous options for dinner nearby. In a nod to changing times, the rooftop terrace (with tiny plunge pool) hosts live music and DJ sessions at weekends, but it’s always tasteful.
