Hostal Girona
Early Modernista architect Ildefons Cerada designed this building in the 1860s, and it retains some significant traces of its design heyday. Enter through a huge front door into a courtyard where horses and carriages once arrived, then take the clanking elevator up to reception (and don’t forget to close the cage door). The hostal’s high-ceilinged rooms are sparsely but coolly decorated, preserving original features like the exquisite geometric floor tiles. Everything is crisp and clean. There’s a good help-yourself breakfast (12€ extra) and a friendly communal feel. Ideal for an Eixample architectural tour on a tight budget.
