Hotel Oriente Atiram
Given its location halfway up La Rambla, this reminder of the boulevard’s glory days represents excellent value. From the outside, its signage, advertising weddings and banquets appears a little down-at-heel, but the ornate plasterwork and marble floor of the lobby speak of its former grandeur—it was once the preferred lodging of the opera singer Maria Callas when performing at the Liceu up the street. By contrast, its guestrooms are basically yet cleanly fitted out, with large, comfortable beds; some have tiny balconies overlooking La Rambla. A generous buffet breakfast (not included) is served in the cloister of the former convent on which the hotel was built, now covered with a glass pyramid.
