Monument
This corner block on Passeig de Gràcia embodies the original Eixample style. It was built in 1895 as a home for the industrialist Enric Batlló (a relative of Josep who commissioned Gaudí’s Casa Batlló down the avenue.) Converted to a hotel in 2016, the Monument’s orderly, neo-Gothic façade and marble staircase retain the sense of Catalan bourgeois propriety. But the guestrooms break away from those strictures with bold, contemporary furniture and exposed brickwork, and the in-hotel restaurant, by the Basque superchef Martín Berasategui, is at the cutting edge of gastronomy. Lasarte is one of the world’s great restaurants, and a compelling reason to stay. Breakfast and Sunday brunch are sensational too.
