Things To Do in Baska

Baska beaches -- Anyone who visits Baska must see the beach even if soaking up the sun isn't on the agenda. By day or night the city's beaches are a center of activity and a great place for people-watching. Baska's long expanse of beach once was a soft sandy strip, but the sand has been covered with pebbles.

Church of St. Lucy -- The floor of this church in Jurandvor, less than a mile north of Baska, is the place where Croatia's Baska Tablet was found in 1851. As with Egypt's Rosetta Stone, it took years to decipher the Glagolitic script that mentions Zvonimir, Croatia's first king. The church is impossible to miss -- it's visible from all over this small town -- and is always open.

Stara Baska -- It's just a tiny village on a bay to the west of Baska proper, but Stara Baska is a sight worth seeing if you can ignore the nearby weekend homes that seem to be multiplying like rabbits. There are no buses here, so you have to drive or devote a day to hiking in the hills. If you fall in love with the place, there are apartments and rooms available as well as three restaurants. In the summer, you also can catch a cruise to Rab, Cres, and Losinj, or just stay put and visit the remains of the medieval St. Jerome Church.
