The gritty portside La Boca neighborhood's most famous artist was Quinquela Martín, who donated much of his work and his residence to become a museum in support of the local art scene and to promote the education of children through art. Martín’s work explored the hazardous and often reckless life of La Boca residents, port workers, and ship builders. He is one of the most popular painters in Argentine history and his story of rising from an orphan in the shanties of La Boca to the highest rungs of upper society inspires the barrio still. His masterpieces, as well as the tools he used to make them, are on display on the top floor. There’s an elementary school on the ground floor. If you are like many and have fallen for the charms of the colorful, rough, lively La Boca neighborhood, you can't miss this stop.
