The Church Street Marketplace is one of the great success stories of downtown development. Situated along 4 blocks that extend southward from the elegant 1816 Congregational Church, this marketplace buzzes with the sort of European-central-square energy that makes urban planners everywhere envious. While the marketplace has been discovered by some national chain stores, it still makes room for homegrown shops, too. In summer, leave time to be entertained by drummers, pan-flutists, buskers, and knots of young folks hanging out, and sample from foods sold in the marketplace -- I ate the best kettle corn of my life here, for instance. Most of the shops listed here are either in the marketplace or within walking distance.
