Gallery Bukovac

The highly acclaimed Croatian portrait and landscape painter Vlaho Bukovac was born in 1855 in the house that now holds his namesake gallery. He studied in Paris, spent time in England (where he was commissioned to paint portraits of aristocrats), traveled to America, and then moved to Czechoslovakia, where he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. Through his travels he kept this 18th-century house in Cavtat, and returned here throughout his life to paint. It now houses a gallery, exhibiting some of his drawings, paintings, and personal possessions.
