Mert's
Everybody comes to Mert's and this little diner shows off the proof: Plastering its walls and columns are dozens of photos and posters (the latter from touring Broadway shows) all signed by past customers. They—and you—come for straightforward renditions of Southern classics, from collard greens and fried green tomatoes to tangy pulled pork. Pricing is fair, and the Southern hospitality is sugary sweet. My waitress' accent was so soothingly thick that it took me a few minutes to realize that what I thought was "karma cake" was actually "caramel cake". Not everything on the menu is worth ordering: I recommend you skip the ribs (really riblets) and fried wings in favor of the fish dishes (especially the salmon cakes) and the excellent vegetable sides.
