Hotels in Cozumel
I’ve grouped Cozumel’s hotels by location—north of town, in town, and south of town. The prices quoted are public rates and typically do not include the 19% tax. I’ve listed the lowest possible rate for high and low season, which typically means the smallest room without a view. High season is from December to Easter and August (when Mexican families go on vacation). Expect rates from Christmas to New Year’s and around Carnival to be higher than the regular high-season rates quoted here.
Most hotels have an arrangement with a dive shop and offer dive packages. These can be good deals, but if you don’t buy a dive package, it’s quite okay to stay at one hotel and dive with a third-party operator—any dive boat can pull up to any hotel pier to pick up customers. Many dive shops won’t pick up from the hotels north of town.
There’s only one hotel on the island's windward side. The isolated, eco-friendly Ventanas al Mar (www.ventanasalmarcozumel.com; tel. 987/564-4287) is ideal for those who want a pure escape. It sits beside a long, pristine beach; Coconuts, a popular restaurant, is on the other side and closes at dusk. As an alternative to a hotel, you can try Cozumel Paradise Villas (www.cozumelparadisevillas.com; tel. 970/577-6153 in the U.S.), which rents villas and condos by the week.
Such websites as VRBO (www.vrbo.com), Flipkey (www.flipkey.com), Homeaway (www.homeaway.com) and others lists lavish vacation homes on the coast and smaller, more modest condos homes in town for rent by owner.
