There are several places to eat on the island, including the fabulous Old Daufuskie Crab Company at Freeport Marina (tel. 843/785-6652), which serves freshly caught shrimp, fish, and, of course, deviled crab (dinner entrée $18). It also fires up excellent steaks and allows you to shuck oysters right off the roasting pit. The outdoor section is perfect for viewing the sunset.

Marshside Mama’s Café, 15 Haig Point Rd., at the County Dock (tel. 843/785-4755; www.marshsidemamas.com) is another tranquil, low-key island diner featuring Lowcountry favorites such as shrimp and grits, gumbo, and grouper sandwiches. Call to check opening times and to make reservations for dinner (recommended in summer).
